How to Avoid Overwatering Your Perennial Plants

Whether you are an expert gardener or just beginning to get your hands dirty, it is possible to create a lush and beautiful garden area that all of your friends’ envy. Perennial plants are long-living plants that offer plenty of colour, texture, and design to any outdoor area. Many homeowners choose perennial plants for the garden because most are drought tolerant and don’t require daily watering. So, if you don’t need to water each day, how do you know if your plants are receiving enough water?

Your Timing Matters

If you want a gorgeous garden area, when you water your plants will make a difference. You should avoid watering during the hottest part of the day because much of the water will evaporate before it reaches the plant’s roots. Ideally, choose to water your plants in the morning or the evening when your perennials plants for shade or sun can more easily absorb the water.

Check the Soil

To keep those beautiful perennial flowers in the full sun or shade healthy and thriving, you must regularly check the soil. The soil will tell you if the plants are receiving enough water or if more moisture is necessary. Dig a small hole in the soil next to your plants or stick your finger several inches into the dirt. If the soil is moist, your perennials do not need additional water. However, if the soil is wet — not just damp — you may be overwatering your plants and you need to cut back. If the soil is very dry, water those plants right away.
